Karma Yoga Class to Benefit Midwest Flood Victims

Sunday August 3 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM
Yogawood 688 Haddon Avenue, Collingswood, NJ 08108
856-858-YOGA
Drop-ins welcome. No pre-registration necessary.

This regularly scheduled Gentle Vinyasa Flow Yoga class will be offered by donation; all contributions will directly benefit the Community Health Free Clinic in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The severe floods that surprised residents throughout the U.S. Midwestern region this summer hit close to home for Yogawood teacher Erin Owen. While visiting her parents in Cedar Rapids in June, flood waters from the Cedar River rose past their highest ever recorded levels. The result: thousands of people just like us were left homeless and hundreds of farms, businesses, and government and cultural buildings are lost. The population that relies on the support of the Community Health Free Clinic in Cedar Rapids is growing rapidly and the clinic?s resources are being stretched. Let's help! Instructor: Erin Owen.

Suggested donation: $14. Can't make it? We'll be accepting contributions all month!

Yoga Class to Benefit Flood Victims with Erin Owen

Saturday August 9, 2008 from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM
Wake Up Yoga Fairmount 2329 Parrish Street (3 blocks N. of Fairmount Ave., NW corner of Bucknell), Philadelphia, PA
215-235-1228
Drop-ins welcome. No pre-registration necessary.

The severe floods that surprised residents throughout the U.S. Midwestern region hit close to home for Erin Owen, graduate of Wake Up’s yoga teacher training program. While Erin was visiting her parents in Cedar Rapids in June, flood waters from the Cedar River rose past flood stage at 12 feet, then past the highest ever recorded level in 1929 of 20.5 feet, finally cresting at a devastating 31.12 feet. The seemingly impossible result was that 9.2 square miles were flooded, covering 3,200 homes and hundreds of businesses, and that was in the city of Cedar Rapids alone. 25,000 residents in Linn County, Iowa are now homeless. Among the treasured buildings that were flooded were the main branch of the public library, the National Czech-Slovak Museum, the African-American Museum, the Mother Mosque (the oldest mosque in the United States), The Paramount (the symphony house), Theater Cedar Rapids, and city government buildings.

Erin’s parents who have long been involved with the arts community there (her father is a composer, her mother a retired music teacher) are in shock. Flood waters in The Paramount rose to 8 feet above stage level and completely destroyed a Wurlitzer organ that had just been restored for $1.2 million; the complete costume collection at Theater Cedar Rapids was destroyed! Disaster specialists who had helped with Hurricane Katrina have been commenting that the flood in Cedar Rapids is worse than any they have seen before because the town was buried in mud, silt, and raw sewage (rather than salt water from the ocean). When Erin left Cedar Rapids (more than 2 weeks after the flood), power had not yet been restored to downtown businesses that were trying to recover.

As the city and region of Eastern Iowa clean up from the flood, average people are struggling to make ends meet. With higher gas prices, higher food prices, and now no place to call home, money for things like health care and mental health services is non existent. The population that relies on the support of the Community Health Free Clinic in Cedar Rapids is growing rapidly and the clinic’s resources are being stretched. Erin visited the clinic, met the Director/CEO and the Advisor to the Board and was impressed by the facilities and the respect with which they treated their patients. She was also impressed to learn that more than 600 members of the community volunteer their time at the clinic.

Please join us for a yoga practice to benefit the flood victims in Erin’s hometown. All proceeds from the class on Saturday, August 9th at 4:30 PM will be donated directly to the Community Health Free Clinic in Cedar Rapids, which provides medical, dental, vision, and mental health services to children and families. Erin will share first-hand some stories of how the flood has impacted her hometown and her friends’ homes and businesses, and lead us through a practice suitable for all levels.

For more information or to donate directly to the Community Health Free Clinic, visit the website at http://www.communityhfc.org/. You may also donate directly to The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation’s Flood 2008 fund – learn more at http://www.gcrcf.org/ . Thank you!
